I think the worst kind of ad is the anti-smoking PSA. And not because of the message, I don't have a problem with the message. What I do have a problem with is with the way they try to *convey* the message.
Like, I saw an ad recently, and it had a biology class, and the teacher's dissecting this weird, alien creature that's snarling, and it has claws, and then it breaks free, and it starts to terrorize the classroom, and that's when you find out that it actually represents... a cigarette.
And then the voice in kicks in, and it's like, Don't be fooled: Every cigarette contains hundreds... of chemicals.
Which is true, I guess. But you know what else does? A baby. That doesn't mean anything, because the word you chose is the only word that can represent everything we know to exist. And I don't get why they're pushing the health aspect anyway. That's not going to change people's minds. That's not new information for anybody. What they really need to do, if they want to be effective, especially with the youth demographic, is they have to make smoking look uncool. They should run a series of ads that link smoking to the most irritating, most annoying people you can imagine.
The title card comes up and it says: 'WHAT SMOKING DOES TO YOU.' And then the rest of the thirty second spot is just a guy smoking and saying stuff like, 'Man, what happened to real music? You know, like, uh... like, um.. Nirvana, and um... Alice and Chains? You know, real music, what I'm talkin' bout.'
We already know that smoking is linked to lung cancer. A real game changer would be to find a link between smoking, and like, wearing a chain wallet, or talking about black flag all the time.
